One primary risk factor for tooth decay is the presence of acid in the mouth, produced from food, drink, and bacteria living in the mouth. Typically, saliva fights against the acidification of the mouth. But in some cases the oral environment can become overly acidified, which can lead to the erosion of tooth enamel and other issues.
Cavity pHighter meets this problem head-on by measuring saliva’s pH level and buffer capacity—essentially its ability to resist acidification. Low salivary pH combined with low buffer capacity is an indicator that a patient may be at increased risk for tooth decay.

As a dental hygiene educator, I was excited to experiment with the Cavity pHighter testing strips and hopefully pique the interest of my students in the area of salivary pH. We tried the strips during an early morning class meeting. Some students had brushed earlier that morning, some had eaten breakfast or sipped on their coffee during the meeting, and some had tried some xylitol gum just prior to testing. The process was simple with immediate, impactful results and the students were eager to discuss their findings. Seeing their own pH level and comparing the test results with classmates made the topic of saliva pH testing personal and meaningful. I teach my student that an effective dental hygienist should be able to teach their patients about how their acidic oral environment contributes to caries risk AND share solutions that will improve oral health. Once saliva is tested, the patient can see the results in less than 30 seconds. That visual evidence about pH and buffering starts an informative conversation with the patient. As a dental hygienist, the ability to literally test and show the level of acidity in the oral cavity is significant. Being able to show a patient what is really happening is invaluable. As a dental provider and dry mouth patient, I have found so much value in using the CAO Cavity pHighter strips. I can monitor my resting pH and my pH levels after using various dry mouth products to ensure the products are safe. I love that these strips check pH AND buffering capacity.
